Ali-bedni bugyal trek

Ali and Bedni Bugyal are considered as two gorgeous sinuous meadows of Uttarakhand. These alpine meadows are located at the border of Kumaon and Garhwal in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state.

The trek to Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal passes through the grasslands and dense forests adjacent to the vertical slopes and hills.

Ali and Bedni Bugyal is favourite trekking destination among trekkers. Behind this, there are some objective reasons and some emotional reasons.

First, we will start with the objective reasons to like these two alpine meadows as a trekking destination.

The alpine Greenland of Ali and Bedni Bugyal

The excitement to find yourself in Ali Bugyal after trekking through the dense forests is unbeatable.

After trekking when you will step out of the shades of the forest cover, you can see vast areas covered in green.

There you will get the glimpse of Mount Trishul, that stands against the blue skies and make an excellent backdrop.

These two massive twin meadows look like the 4D version of Windows XP wallpaper. The trek to Bedni Bugyal from the Ali Bugyal is super exciting.

Through this trek, you would like to take your shoes off to feel the carpet of soft green grass.

What you will see at Ali and Bedni Bugyal

Here at Bedni Bugyal, this mount stands like a sentient guard along with the mount Nanda Ghunti.

The view of the mount Trishul let you follow the way down to the Ghairoli Patal that twinkles in the evening by the light of the campsite.

You will see this when you disembark down more to the Neel Ganga.

Here at Bedni Bugyal, Bedni Kund has great religious importance among the locals.

The mysterious forests of Ghairoli Patal

The downhill to Wan across the forests of Ghairoli Patal is entirely a change from the ingenuity of the meadows.

If you trek here in the dry months, you can hear the rustling of dry leaves, sounds of birds chirping among the leafage, and sound of the wind whistling through the branches.

The trekking trail passes through the forests of Rhododendron and Oak, and the way is scattered with dry leaves that will be crackled beneath your trekking shoes.

There you can see pear, walnut trees, and Himalayan roses. Also, you can sport birds in this region such as Magpies and Flycatcher.

The light of the campsite that falls on the trees and the evening light on the Mount Trishul offers a picture-perfect scene.

The weather at Ali and Bedni Bugyal

The weather is unpredictable in this region, and there is also a famous saying about the weather of Bugyal as

Mumbai ka fashion aur Bugyal ka Mausam badalta rehta hai

In these meadows, the mornings usually are getting clear while you can get the outstanding view of the mountains, but after afternoon the weather gets misty.

Travel Distance: 260 kms
Travel time: 10-11 hours
Altitude: 7,748 ft (2,316 m)

Rishikesh. In Ali and Bedni Bugyal trek, Lohajung is the base camp. After you cross Nainital, you
will see the beautiful route. You have to drive along the mountain roads and forests. If you start
your journey on a clear day, here you can witness the glimpse of Garhwal mountains that is
situated at a distance. After you reach Lohajung, you will see the Nanda Ghunti peak, right in
front of you and if you will be there before sunset, the colours of the peak you make you
stunned. Lohajung is the centre point of nearby twelve to fifteen villages. There are also some
local stores where you can buy hand gloves, jackets, shoes, or other woollen accessories.
Though it is recommended to carry woollen accessories when you start for the trek to this
Himalayan region. Most of the parts of Lohajung the mobile network will be available.
According to local peoples, it is believed that Lohajung is the particular place where Devi Parvati
had a war with a demon named Lohasur. Therefore, this place is called as Lohajung.

Day 2 -Reach Didna from Lohajung

Depart from Lohajung at: 9:00 am
Trek Distance: 9 kms
Trek time: 10-11 hours
Altitude: 7,740 ft/2384 m to 8,186 ft/2495 m

It requires around 5 hours to reach Didna from Lohajung. Behind the Lohajung bus stand, you
will find a trail that will take you to the Raun Bagad, that is an iron bridge situated just below
the Didna village. It is a notable trail that passes through the mixed forests. When you will walk
through the Raun Bagad, you will hear the sweet whistles of singing birds and the soft chirping
of the Curlews among the Rhododendrons. Then you will see the see Wan river below the Raun
Bagadthat rushes to meet the Bedni Ganga. There you also will see the Lammergeiers, that
spread their massive wings to catch the eddies. Here, if you take the route on the road, then
the Kulling village will appear. This small village consists of 20 odd houses that are set against
the stepped hills.
From Kulling village, there is a landing to the Wan river. Then you have to climb all the height
that is lost on the other bank. If you will take the trail across the mixed forest, then you will get
a gradual landing to the river. Over the river, there is a bridge named Raun Bagad. Here you
also can camp, if you reach early to Lohajung. After you cross this river, you have to start
climbing the trail. The route to Didna is zig-zag. Though the climb is moderate, still you will feel
a bit tired while climbing the trail. Withing a walk for one and a half hour, you will reach Didna

village. If you take rest during climbing, it can take around two hours. Didna village may appear
a bit confusing as there you will find several trails, but you have to choose particularly a trail
that passes around the village on the outer amplitude. This trail directly will take you to the
Didna campsite that appears at the height of 200 feet from the village.

Day 3-Climb to Abin Kharak or Khobal Tal from Didna via Ali Bugyal

Trek starts from Didna at: 8:00 am
Trek Distance: 9.6 kms
Travel time: 6 – 7 hours
Altitude: 8,186 ft/2495 m to 11,185 ft/3409 m

At Didna, you will get the perfect campsite, and down the campsite, there is a clear stream. This
campsite stares across the valley. Here you can see that Kulling, Lohajung, and Wan are places
from left to right. Behind you can see the forests of Oak and above you will witness the next
part of the trek, named Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal.
Then you can start walking towards Tolpani, that is a bunch of shepherd’s huts, situated 3
kilometres away and the height of this place is 1000 feet. The trail to Tolpani moves away from
the route to Ali Bugyal. This climb is good where you will see some dense forests of Oak.
Beneath these forests, you can see the brown carpet of leaves. After you appear on the baulk
that leads to the twin meadows of Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, start walking towards your
destination. On either side, the forests continue to flaunt the trail. After walking around 3
kilometres, the landscape will open up. Here you can see the spectacular view of the great
meadows of Ali Bugyal. Here you will reach to the top of a baulk that spreads in every direction.
Here you can see green meadows spread over acres and acres that are surrounded by
mountains. Here, right out of the forest you will get the Abin Kharak campsite where you can
spend a night.

Day 4 -Reach Gairoli Patal from Abin Kharak / khobal tal via Bedni Bugyal-

Starts from Abin kharak / Khobal tal at: 8:00 am
Trek Distance: 6.5 kms
Trek time: 5 – 6 hours
Maximum Altitude: 11,700 ft.

After reaching the Abin Kharak, you have to reach Ghairoli Patal. Here clouds glide over the
ridge in slow motion. You can see many horses here pasturage on the bounty of nature. Here
you have to climb or walk around 5 kilometres to reach Bedni Bugyal. During this walk, you also
can put your shoes off to feel the tender touch of grasses on your toes. In these areas, the
weather fluctuates a lot, and here you also can witness the beauty of wild sunrise. Don’t forget
to carry your raincoat as you can get rain sometimes in this region. Here you can see the
mountain, and below of that the Bedni Bugyal appears, that looks heavenly. Now trek through
the trail that leads to the right and below. After walking for 20 minutes, you will see the line
and sharp landings that display the end of the meadows. Now on your left, you can see the
descending trail. Here you can trek down into the forest of Oak and Rhododendron. Here you
can see the green trekker’s hut that signals Ghairoli Patal. If you trek on a clear day, you can get
the glimpse of Mount Trishul.

Day 5 -Trek down to Wan from Gairoli Patal via Neel Ganga River And drive back to Lohajung

Starts from Gairoli patal at: 6:00 am
Trek Distance: 6.5 kms
Trek time: 4 – 5 hours
Travel Distance: 15 kms
Travel time: 0:30 – 1 hours
Altitude: 10,515 ft/ 3205 m to 8,061 ft/ 2457 m

From Ghairoli Patal you have to trek to the steep ridge to Neel Ganga. If you can walk fast, you
can reach the river within one and a half hour; otherwise, you will reach by two hours. So, take
your time as during this trek you will witness incredible stretch of forest. The bridge over the
Neel Ganga is an ideal location, where you can wash the grime of the long trek. You will find the
water refreshing and cool. From this river, you need to climb for a half hour over the Wan
village. There are several routes to the bottom of the Wan village, and all of the roads lead to
the Kasar Bagad. It will take about an hour to get down to Kasar Bagad. There is also an
alternative route that is a bit longer to reach Wan. From the ridge of Wan, you will take the
main trail to reach the lower Wan village. Here, you can spend quality time by seeing the
ancient Cyprus trees. Here you can hire a jeep from Wan village that will take you to Lohajung
within around 45 minutes.
